대장경 내 이야기
제목 : 아난아, 보현보살은 동쪽의 맑고 묘한 국토에 태어나나니, 그 국토의 모습은 『법화경(法華經)』에서 이미 널리 분별하였거니와 이제 간략히 해설하리라.
아난아, 비구ㆍ비구니ㆍ우바새ㆍ우바이ㆍ천룡팔부(天龍八部)와 온갖 중생으로서 대승의 경을 외우는 이와 대승을 닦는 이와 대승의 뜻을 일으키는 이와 보현보살의 색신(色身)을 보기 좋아하는 이와 다보불탑(多寶佛塔)을 뵈옵기 좋아하는 이와 석가모니부처님과 몸을 나누신[分身] 모든 부처님을 뵈옵기 좋아하는 이와 6근(根)이 청정하기를 좋아하는 이는 마땅히 이 관법(觀法)을 배울지니라. 이 관법의 공덕은 모든 장애를 제거하고 높고 묘한 색(色)을 보게 하느니라. 삼매(三昧)에 들지 않아도 다만 외우고 지니어 전일한 마음으로 닦고 익히며, 마음과 마음을 서로 잇대어서 대승을 여의지 않으면 하루에서 7일 만에 보현을 보게 되리라. 무거운 업장이 있는 이는 49일이 다하여야 보며, 더욱 무거운 이는 한 생[一生] 만에 보며, 더욱 무거운 이는 두 생 만에 보며, 더욱 무거운 이는 세 생 만에 보나니, 이와 같이 갖가지 업보가 같지 않으므로 다르게 말하느니라.
보현보살의 몸은 끝없고, 음성도 끝없으며, 모양도 끝없거늘 이 국토에 오려 하면 자재한 신통에 들어 몸을 줄이어 적게 하나니, 염부제의 사람들은 3장(障)이 무겁기 때문이니라.
지혜의 힘으로써 흰 코끼리를 탄 몸으로 변화하나니, 그 코끼리는 여섯 어금니[六牙]요, 일곱 굽[七支]으로 땅을 디디고, 그 일곱 굽 아래에는 일곱 송이의 연꽃이 솟아나느니라. 코끼리의 빛은 곱고 희니, 흰 가운데서도 높은 것이어서 파리(頗梨)ㆍ설산(雪山)으로도 견주지 못하리라. 몸의 길이는 450유순(由旬)이고, 높이는 4백 유순이며, 여섯 어금니의 끝에는 여섯 개의 목욕하는 못[浴池]이 있고, 낱낱 못에는 열네 가지 연꽃이 나서 못과 똑같으리라. 그 꽃이 피면 하늘의 큰 나무[天樹王]와 같고, 낱낱 꽃 위에는 하나씩 옥녀(玉女)가 있으니, 얼굴은 붉게 빛나서 다른 천녀(天女)보다 뛰어나느니라.
